Just arrived it is already back to the end. This country, indeed the whole continent, is vast in its breadth and variety, and there is definitely something for everyone. The last 5 weeks we’ve been on the way in our camper and landed in the most diverse areas. Here you can find everything, jungle, endless dry pastures, succulent hillsides, eucalyptus forests, river landscapes, mountain chains, and, of course, large cities. Again and again we were flashed by how hugely Australia is, we often went straight for hours and right and left was nothing but forest. How beautiful. There you are looking forward to the next city on the map and then you land again in some tiny little village. We also liked to wander a little bit inland to enjoy the Australian mountains.
There are for sure a lot of beautiful beaches and many opportunities to do some outdoor activities. The offer ranges from surfing, stand up paddeling, diving, snorkeling, biking, kayaking, hiking or just cruising along the promenade with a longboard. But you can also visit a couple of Winerys, Brewerys and Cheeserys on the way. Of course we tried to do as much as possible, as far as possible with our little one.
We already wrote about Brisbane and the surrounding area in the last post, afterwards we went further south. Even when we are at the beginning of the summer here, we had some pretty cold nights, especially in the mountains. A favorite for us was the small place “Dorrigo”. After a rainforest walk we made a delicious bbq and camped outside the village exactly at the entrance to the “Danger Falls” waterfall. The heaven at night changed to a huge starlight tent, simply indescribably beautiful. The next morning we went down the short path to the end of the waterfall to take a refreshing dip in the pool. How can a day start better?
The Blue Mountains fascinated us with a huge backdrop and great hiking trails. In between we were allowed to enjoy some wildlife. Kangoroos met us well enough on a coastline, koalas in the wild are quite rare, but also showed themselves. The bird world is huge, there are different types of Parrots and Kakadoos. From these we were given regular evening performances before the sun went off and then came the time of the Flying Foxes, huge bats, which pulled over in groups of hundreds to fill their stomachs. Brilliant! We were spared from snakes and spiders. A snake skin from a Python was all we found.
Of course, we also passed cities and watched the lives of the stressed citypeople. Sydney we found as very business oriented. The large botanical garden next to the famous opera house is used as a small oasis in the big city jungle.
Melbourne, on the other hand, was much more relaxed for us. You can meet all kinds of shapes here, everyone dresses up however they feel, sometimes really strange, there are some quiet retreats, playgrounds and many different events. For example the Summer Night Market with an estimated 60 different street food stands, Oltimer and Hot Road Show and Life bands. Weve also been to an Africa festival with a drum workshop for kids and much more.
One of the most beautiful stretches on our over 4000km drive was the “Great Ocean Road”. The only disturbing are the many flies and the masses of Chinese who make their photo stops. We were not sure what made us more annoying.
Our top spot was the “Wilson’s Promontory National Park”. A small paradise where you could spend weeks. Hiking to viewpoints, wildlife spotting, surfing or relaxing on one of the beautiful beaches. As far as a toddler who wants to move al the time let you relax! We tryed to spend only 1 to max 3 hours daily in the car, we mostly used Louis sleeping time before lunch to drive and meanwhile we know most of the playgrounds on the east coast. Traveling with a child is simply different … usually it is great, but sometimes there are days where it is not quite easy when Louis gets a new tooth again, or so, but the main thing we are together and travel 🙂 the many We do not want to miss any new impressions!
This weekend we fly to New Zealand. Everyone we met, who was already there, swarms away. We are so excited and look forward to more beautiful moments.
